This is an important question. More for its utility, not for its definition. It clarifies in what areas of life would our facilitation be useful and what is the basis of that facilitation.

I am a facilitator of creativity in citizens as a life-skill, and for business people as a business-enhancing skill. In both areas, good results can be obtained through two ways – excellence and creativity. Excellence and more effort/resources are great things and definitely results in significant improvements. But that route is not what we talking about. We are talking of fantastic results mainly as a result of conscious application of good thinking skills, resulting in an improved set of options. Mostly, this is made possible by a deliberate change of mindset which makes you see possibilities which were always there.

We deal in practical applications of creativity available to everyone following of good creativity techniques.

Yes, our creativity is technique driven nor inspiration driven.

Is it not a contradiction in terms that while creativity is all about breaking the  existing mindset or structure,  but itself follows the structure of a well defined technique?

Not really.

Our minds look at existing elements of any situation in a structured way. The needle is stuck in the groove. The groove, however, is not real. It is created in your mind by your mindset. To move the needle out of the groove, there are several techniques. These techniques are indeed structured, but only in the sense that the steps are well defined. That makes the techniques teachable for the facilitator and learnable for the learner. But do note that the technique does not present a fixed, new arrangement of facts to the user. That is still left to the user. Which way does the needle settle down after being forced out of the groove is not known to the facilitator.

One more thing. Beyond the normal techniques of creativity, there is TRIZ.

TRIZ is the biggest magic of them all. It recognises that people get stuck in a a situation not so much by a lack of imagination but by bad thinking. It also hypothesizes that the type of mistakes people make are limited and the way they have been corrected by others in the past are also limited. With this, TRIZ is able to offer much quicker and more effective solution. It’s no longer a blind trial.

Hope it helps.
